Thanks to the visionary educator from Caguas, Don Juan Huertas Torres, a learning institution was born in 1945. During those difficult years, many young people did not finish high school and others, due to financial reasons, couldn’t afford neither the state university nor private ones.
When it opened its doors in the city of Caguas, it was first known as "Secretarial High School" but many called it Huertas College. That's how a new educational alternative for the population was born offering high school completion programs plus secretarial and basic accounting courses. The Institution was certified by the Department of Public Instruction, now known as the Department of Education. Many students who completed their studies became part of the workforce in government offices, banking and commerce and began contributing to the development of the country.
In 1969 the College began the transformation from a small institution to what is Huertas Junior College now when the nephews of Don Juan Huertas, Ruben and Paul R. López Huertas, took charge of the College's administration.
The College's new administration focused its efforts on making this small college into a university college or "junior college". That's when the process of transforming the administrative and academic structure began. By 1976 the first associate degrees were offered, the same year that the institution was accredited by the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, the "national accrediting agency", so that our students could receive federal and state financial aid. Then, in 1980, we were licensed and accredited by the Higher Education Council.
The 80's and 90's were marked by the establishment of degree programs in technology and health related areas, the acquisition of new facilities and a considerable investment in modern laboratories.
By early 2000 the College administration faced a major challenge: the accreditation process of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the most prestigious and demanding regional accrediting agency. In 2006 this recognition was granted to the College for its academic and administrative excellence.
We feel very proud of what we are, one of the top private schools in Caguas and Puerto Rico specializing in the Business Administration area. We were also pioneers in Caguas and neighboring towns offering degree programs in the Health and Technology field and the first to get an accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education as a community college in our region.
Today Huertas Junior College is a vibrant institution, full of enthusiasm with a flattering future aimed towards a common goal: make fully trained professionals in the Business Administration and Health and Technology areas.
Sixty-five years of existence is our best credential as an educational institution of excellence in all our components. Time have shown it and thousands of graduates can attest to that.
We are eternally grateful to all who have worked with us to make this possible.
